After informing Hugh and Rosemary their plug was on my web site, they replied with this kind message. Ivan: What a wonderful surprise we had when we opened up the mail and went to your Web Page. We can't say just how pleased and honoured we are to be on your Web Page and be a bit of Peggy's Cove. It was truly a great experience being there and meeting you all. If we were of any assistance to you in any small way, we are more then happy to help. Thank you, Hugh & Rosemary Collins |

Peggy of the Cove is a charming portrait of early Canadian life in the mid 1800's.
Peggy, as she comes to be named, is the sole survivor of a shipwreck that took place on Halibut Rock, just off Peggy's Point, Nova Scotia. After her rescue, Peggy realizes she has no memory of who she is and is named so by her new family. The story of her miraculous rescue and recovery spreads throughout the community and she eventually becomes known as Peggy of the Cove. The first in a series of historical novels for families to share, there are some wonderful photographs of the area, which give the reader a sense of local color both past and present. Fraser's narrative flows nicely, and it is the kind of story that feels as though it should be read out loud. Peggy is a likeable character and her voice is warm and inviting. It is the kind of book that pulls the reader in and draws strongly from the oral tradition of storytelling. As a novel set in Canada and pertaining to historical fiction, it would be well placed in a school library. While the stories of her adventures are interesting and entertaining, the one difficulty with the book is that it jumps around. At times it was difficult to follow when a particular episode was taking place, and the action seemed confused. A more linear structure would have improved reading ease. Overall, this was a sweet and enjoyable novel, and one of those rare books that truly does have an all ages appeal. Dear Ivan and Staff,
I'd like to thank you all for the wonderful service you have shown all my guests during the 2006 tourist season. Each and every one on my passengers come away from your home thrilled with having had the opportunity to visit and to meet you and Peggy. As you are aware, a big portion of motor coach travel involves "learning and discovery", by incorporating a stop at your location the passengers get "up-front and personal".
I will be including a stop to the house of "Peggy of the Cove" every time I travel through. Each and every coach passing by is missing an opportunity to experience a truly Nova Scotian experience!
With many thanks,
Paula Miller Foster

(Carmen's Comments) Hi Ivan. On behalf of the 2nd St. Margaret's Bay Girl Guides unit, I would like to thank you very much for the wonderful evening we had at your studio recently. We were not sure what to expect and the girls and I were very pleasantly surprised and pleased with what the evening had to offer. It was great to be able to bring the girls to a local studio, and meet a local artist, author, song writer, photographer and painter all in one who was so entertaining! This outing also helped us toward badge work in our guiding program, which was very helpful as well.
Substitute gull feeding. If the gull had co-operated, this would be the result.
The girls really enjoyed the tour of the old homestead, especially hearing the folklore about Peggy and seeing the photograph of her in the wave.
It was great for them to see the old homestead in its original form, to see the old furniture and clothes and toys, and your artwork as a child (this encourages them to keep on being creative, and where this can lead them!) The hike up behind the homestead was a good workout for us and we enjoyed seeing the beautiful view of the Bay from up on the hill. They soon got over their disappointment about the seagulls not showing up to feed when they realized they could get away with having their very own food fight with the bread crumbs- they loved this! The treasure hunt was great- kept the girls involved and interested and was very informative (they were quite impressed with looking at the cancer on the trees!) The treasure they found, gold chocolate coins and bubble gum, was a nice surprise enjoyed by all- thank you! Snack time on the benches overlooking the Bay was also enjoyable. We enjoyed hearing you read an excerpt from your book. Hiking back down the hill was much easier (much to the adult's delight!) and the girls couldn't wait to get inside the old homestead gift shop to see what they could purchase! Your website was an excellent source of information and the girls and parents were able to view this prior to the event, which helped prepare them for the evening. The girls also appreciated the challenge of the bubble gum blowing contest, the prints you gave them (The Swing looks great framed and hung in my office!) and the pictures you took of them for your website! Thanks again for such an enjoyable experience. We will definitely recommend this to other guiders and their units and we look forward to other books from you about Peggy on the Cove!
Yours in Guiding;
Carmen Johnstone-Chapman

| Hi Ivan I almost attacked the UPS man as he came to deliver my package from you. Oh I love the CD and the books. I have played the CD repeatedly for the last hour. The first thing I did was read the hard cover book which I will have to get for my 2 grand daughters. The illustrations were lovely and well written. I have so much to do today and I am trying to read the other book. It is great. I can't wait to get the next volume. Thank you so much for the books and CD. I can't wait to meet you and see Peggy's room. You sound charming ... and you write well. Betsy Antonellis

| Dear Ivan, Thank you from the bottom of my heart! The field trip was amazing. The students and parents loved every minute of it. It was a rich experience for all Thanks for sharing so many wonderful stories from your childhood. Everything was great, from the hike up Fraser's Hill to the snake found in the grass! (Did you plant it there??) The students have not been this excited about a field trip in a long time! I'm sure many will ask their parents to take them back again in the future. Sincerely, Judy Cornelius (Grade 3 Teacher) |
